MAP2140 Unable to power off from a System z host system

When the System z® remote power feature is installed, the first rack contains a ZLR type of local remote switch card. The DIP switch that is on each RPC card will have switch 3 set to the on (right) position. A failure that disables the remote power control can be internal or external to the storage facility.

Before you begin

You must determine the following:
  • The feature is properly installed
  • System z feature switch is set to ON (right) on both RPC logic cards
  • All cable connections are correct
  • The System z local remote switch card switch is set to Remote
  • The management console is available and the power control mode at the management console is set to System z remote.

About this task

While the Local/Remote switch is set to Remote and the management console has enabled the System z power control mode, the storage facility is powered on and off from the attached System z hosts or power controller. A power off of the storage facility will be initiated when the last host has de-asserted both their +Pick and +Hold signals. When the last System z host has de-asserted the signals, the RPC cards will notify the management console and the management console begins the storage facility power off. The management console must have System z power control mode active for this storage facility.

MAP2140 Section-1

Before you begin

Ensure that the customer can allow the storage facility to be powered off. The following procedure requires the storage facility to be powered off and on.

About this task

Note: You can temporarily bypass the failure to power off as described in step 4.

Procedure

  1. Determine whether the power-off problem is internal or external to the storage facility. Slowly disconnect each host remote power control cable one at a time from the System z local remote switch (ZLR) card. For Model 941, refer to Figure 1; for Model 951 and Model 961, refer to Figure 2. Allow time for the storage facility to power off, if the problem was with that cable or host. Did the storage facility power off?
    • Yes, the failure is external to the storage facility. The failure is with the host remote power control cable, or the host itself not providing the proper signals. Exit this procedure.
    • No, the failure is internal to the storage facility. Go to the next step.
Note: Figure 1 is for Model 941.

Figure 2. Model 951, 961 ZLR card (with connectors)
Remote power control cables from host to ZLR card
  2. Replace the following FRUs in the order they are listed. Before a FRU is replaced, the ZLR card Local/Remote switch must be set to the Local position. After you replace each FRU, return the Local/Remote switch to the remote position so you can verify that the storage facility can be powered off from the System z interface. When you replace a FRU that resolves the problem, reconnect all of the remote power cables that were removed in step 1. Refer to Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5.
    1. ZLR card
      1. Set the Local/Remote switch to the Local position.
      2. Ensure that the system is fully powered on.
      3. Use the utilities at the management console to select system Level Deactivate for RPC-1(C1)
Storage Facility Management > 242x-xxx-sssssss > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources > Show Rack Enclosures > (select rack) > U242x.xxx.sssssss-C1 (Rack power Control (RPC) Card, State: available > System Level Deactivate
      4. State should be: service mode.
      5. Replace the System z local remote switch card using the Exchange the local remote or zSeries local remote switch card. Then, return here and continue.
Note: The local remote signals to the RPC cards will float to local mode when the cables to the RPC cards are unplugged.
      6. Use the utilities at the management console to select System Level Activate for RPC-1.
      7. State should be available.
      8. Go to step 3.
    2. RPC Card 1
      1. Use the replace FRU utility to replace RPC card 1 (C1). See MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
      2. Go to step 3.
    3. RPC Card 2
      1. Use the replace FRU utility to replace RPC card 2 (C2). See MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
      2. Go to step 3.
    4. Cable from RPC card 1 connector C1-J204 or C1-T204 to the System z remote local switch card connector J5 .Refer to Figure 3, Figure 4, and Figure 5.
      1. Set the System z local remote switch card switch to the Local position.
      2. Ensure that the storage facility is fully powered on.
      3. Use the utilities at the management console to select System Level Deactivate for RPC-1 (C1).
Storage Facility Management > 242x-xxx-sssssss > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources > Show Rack Enclosures > (select rack) > U242x.xxx.sssssss-C1 (Rack power Control (RPC) Card, State: available > System Level Deactivate .
      4. State should be: service mode.
      5. Physically replace the cable.
      6. Use the utilities at the management console to select System Level Activate for RPC-1.
    5. Cable from RPC card 2 connector C2-J204 or C2-T204 to the System z remote local switch card connector J6.Refer to Figure 3, Figure 4, and Figure 5.
      1. Set the Local/Remote Switch to the Local position.
      2. Ensure that the system is fully powered on.
      3. Use the utilities at the management console to select System Level Deactivate for RPC-2 (C2).
Storage Facility Management > 242x-xxx-sssssss > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources > Show Rack Enclosures > (select rack) > U242x.xxx.sssssss-C2 (Rack power Control (RPC) Card, State: available > System Level Deactivate.
      4. State should be service mode.
      5. Physically replace the cable.
      6. Use the utilities at the management console to select System Level Activate for RPC-2.

  3. Test the new FRU.
    1. Set the System z local remote switch card switch to the Remote position.
    2. Attempt to power off the storage facility from the remote host. Does the storage facility power off?
      • Yes, the FRU just replaced was failing. Return the storage facility to customer use.
      • No, return to step 2 and replace the next FRU in the list. If all FRUs have been replaced, contact your next level of support.
  4. You can temporarily bypass the failure to power off in either of the following ways:
    • Switch the System z local remote card switch to Local and then momentarily press the System z local remote card Force Power Off switch (white rocker switch) to off (down).
    • Change the Power Mode at the management console to manual power and then power the storage facility off at the management console.
