Before you begin

Icon for electrostatic discharge wrist strapUse approved ESD procedures to prevent damage.

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.
DANGER

Preparing to remove and replace the 12V power supply

Procedure

  1. Open the rear door.
  2. A failure of this FRU is not isolated by code, it is only isolated by a visual symptom.
    1. You should have been sent here by MAP2750 visual symptoms for power junction assembly (PJA) devices (Models 98x) that isolated the problem to the 12V power supply shown in Figure 1.
    2. This MAP repeats some of the isolation to ensure the correct 12V power supply is replaced.
    3. There are six 12V power supplies (E31, E32, E33, E34, E35, E36) that work in parallel to provide continuous power to the management consoles, Ethernet switches, and monitor.
    4. The power supplies are at the upper left rear and upper right rear of Rack-1.
    5. Each power supply receives power from a power distribution unit (PDU) at the rear of the rack.
    Figure 1. Models 980, 981, 982 base rack locations
Note: Locations for models 980, 981, 982 are shown. DC-UPS locations are similar for models 98x and 8xE.
    Model 980, 981, 982 base rack locations
  3. Determine the correct 12V power supply to be replaced.
    1. At the right rear of the rack, locate both power junction assemblies (PJA), E41 and E42, as shown in Figure 1.
    2. Observe the J4, J6 and J8 LED indicators on both PJAs, as shown in Figure 2.
    3. Use Table 1 to determine the LEDs condition and action.

Removing the 12V power supply

Procedure

  1. A single PJA input power LED is off.
  2. Before replacing the power supply, ensure the problem is not external to the power supply.
    1. Refer to Table 2. Find the row that contains the PJA input connector with the LED that is off. This is the affected PJA input connector. In that same row, find the affected 12V power supply and the associated PDU output connector.
    2. Ensure the power supply input cable is properly connected to the affected 12V power supply.
    3. Ensure the associated PDU output power LED indicator is lit. If it is off, do not replace the power supply, instead go to MAP2740 Power distribution unit (PDU) isolation (Models 98x).
    4. Ensure the power supply input cable is properly connected to the associated PDU output connector.
    5. Ensure the power supply output cable is properly connected to the affected PJA input connector.
    6. If the cables are properly connected, go to the next step.
    7. If the cables are not properly connected, reconnect them now and then return to Preparing to remove and replace the 12V power supply, step 3.

  3. To remove the 12V power supply, complete the following steps:
    1. You will not use the normal management console parts exchange GUI screens process to replace this FRU. Instead you will use this procedure to replace and verify the new power supply.
    2. Disconnect the power supply input cable from the power supply.
    3. Disconnect the power supply output cable from the PJA input connector.
    4. Unfasten the hook-and-loop fastener to free the power supply from the bracket.
    5. Unfasten the cable ties as needed and remove the cable and power supply from the rack.
  4. Go to Replacing the 12V power supply.

Replacing the 12V power supply

Procedure

  1. Install the new power supply in the bracket and secure with the hook-and-loop fastener.
  2. Connect the power supply input cable to the power supply.
  3. Route and connect the power supply output cable to the affected PJA input connector.
  4. Are the affected PJA input and output power LED indicators lit?
  5. Ensure the power supply cables are properly fastened.
  6. Display open serviceable events to ensure no related problems occurred during this parts exchange.
  7. Close the rear door.
  8. Exit this procedure.
