Exchange the CEC enclosure RAID card

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Preparing the CEC enclosure to remove and replace the RAID card

Procedure

  1. Use a replacement part with a valid DS8000® part number to ensure it has the proper firmware, VPD, or configuration to ensure it is compatible with the DS8000 service procedures. Attempting to use a generic server FRU might fail and require next level of support to recover.
  2. All parts being removed must be marked or identified so they can be installed into their original locations.
    Note: Failure to do this can extend the service duration and may require next level of support assistance.
  3. The management console keyboard can be moved between the operating and stowed position as needed to allow service clearance above the CEC enclosure.
  4. Use the front and rear blue identify LEDs to determine the CEC enclosure to be repaired. Both blue LEDs should be lit.
    • CEC control panel blue identify LED Callout label B as shown in Figure 1.
    • CEC enclosure rear blue identify LED Callout label 1 as shown in Figure 2.
    Note: If both the front and rear CEC enclosure identify LEDs are not lit, use the location code listed in the serviceable event FRU list. See MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.

  5. Verify that the CEC enclosure is in the power-off state. See Figure 3
    1. At the rear of the CEC enclosure, view all CEC enclosure power supply DC LEDs.
    2. Are all DC (output) LEDs flashing?

  6. Attach the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent the electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
    • When using an ESD wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. An ESD wrist strap is used for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have an ESD wrist strap, just before removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  7. Disconnect the power cords Callout label B from the CEC with the DC (output) LEDs flashing. See Figure 4.
    Notes:
    • Ensure the power cords are correctly labeled.
    • The power supply LEDs might continue to flash for up to 20 seconds while internal power is discharged.
    • The power cord is fastened to the system using the hook-and-loop fastener Callout label A. Unstrap the fastener to allow the enclosure to be placed in the service position.

  8. Observe the CEC enclosure control panel green power button LED Callout label A. See Figure 5.
    • If it is off, go to the next step.
    • If it is flashing, the CEC enclosure is still in the power-off state. DO NOT CONTINUE. Ensure that you have unplugged the power cables.

  9. Remove the front cover.
    CAUTION:
    A hot surface nearby.
    1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
    2. Place your fingers on the indentations and pull the latches Callout label B located on both sides of the cover.
    3. Pull the cover Callout label A away from the system.

Removing the CEC enclosure RAID card

About this task

To remove the CEC enclosure RAID card, complete the following steps:

Procedure

  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
  2. Loosen, but do not remove the recessed shipping screws Callout label A in the RAID assembly by using a 4 mm Allen wrench, as shown in Figure 7.

  3. Turn the thumbscrews in the direction shown. Pull out the latches and remove the RAID assembly from the system, as shown in Figure 8.

  4. Turn the RAID assembly upside down and place the assembly on a flat surface, as shown in Figure 9.

  5. Press down on the RAID assembly cover latches Callout label A, then slide the cover Callout label B in the direction that is shown and lift to remove it, as shown in Figure 10.

  6. Label and remove all of the fans from the RAID assembly by pressing the tabs of each fan and lifting them up. Place the fans on the ESD mat. See Figure 11.

  7. Remove four screws from each side of the RAID assembly by using a T10 Torx screwdriver. See Figure 12.

  8. Grasp the disk drive backplane Callout label B with both hands and pull it toward you until pins Callout label A that are located underneath the disk drive backplane, clear the RAID assembly slot. Then, lift the disk drive backplane to remove it, as shown in Figure 13.

Replacing the CEC enclosure RAID card

About this task

To replace the CEC enclosure RAID card, complete the following steps:

Procedure

  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
  2. Slide the disk drive backplane Callout label B into position on the RAID assembly. Ensure the pins Callout label A that are located underneath the disk drive backplane are inserted into the slots of the RAID assembly. See Figure 14.

  3. Replace the four screws on each side of the RAID assembly by using a T10 Torx screwdriver. See Figure 15.

  4. Replace all of the fans into their original positions in the RAID assembly, as shown in Figure 16.

  5. Slide the RAID assembly cover Callout label A in the direction that is shown until the latches Callout label B lock in position, as shown in Figure 17.

  6. Turn the RAID assembly over, as shown in Figure 18.

  7. Slide the RAID assembly into the system. Push latches in and tighten thumbscrews, as shown in Figure 19.

Preparing the CEC enclosure for operation after removing and replacing the RAID card

About this task

To prepare the system for operation, complete the following steps:

Procedure

  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
  2. Replace the front cover.
    1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
    2. Position the cover Callout label A on the front of the system unit so that the four pins Callout label B on the system match the four holes at the rear of the cover.
    3. Press the tabs Callout label C to snap the cover into position.

  3. Attach the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap.
  4. Reconnect the power cords Callout label A to the CEC enclosure. See Figure 21.
  5. Fasten the power cords to the enclosure using the hook-and-loop fasteners Callout label B.

  6. Verify that the CEC enclosure has power available. See Figure 22.
    1. At the rear of the CEC enclosure, view the CEC enclosure power supply DC LEDs.
    2. Are all DC (output) LEDs flashing?
      • Yes, continue with the next step.
      • No, ensure the power cords are properly connected. If no connection problem is found, contact your next level of support.

  7. Wait up to 5 minutes for the CEC enclosure control panel power-button LED Callout label A to flash. See Figure 23.
    Note: This ensures the CEC enclosure is in the power-off state.

    Is the power-button LED flashing?

    • Yes, go to the next step.
    • No, ensure the CEC enclosure power supplies are fully seated. The possible failing FRUs are the CEC enclosure system backplane, I2C interface card and cables, and control panel. You can also call the next level of support.

  8. Close the rear door of the rack.
