Powering on and verifying the storage facility

About this task

DANGER
The DS8000® will be powered on automatically during this procedure. Hazardous voltages will be present. Ensure that all safety covers are in place and that normal safety precautions are taken.

Procedure

  1. On Rack-1, set the Local/Remote switch on the local remote switch card (C6) to Remote (right position - toward the rear of the rack).

  2. Has it been 30 minutes since the Rack-1 CB1 main line switches were set to on?
    • Yes, go to step 3.
    • No, when you know 30 minutes have elapsed since the CB1 main line switches were set to on, go to step 3.
Note: Waiting 30 minutes ensures correct management console communication to the CEC FSPs.
  3. Power on and verification of the new storage facility must be done from the primary management console (MC 1). If not done previously, slide the management console keyboard/display drawer out to the service position and open the keyboard. Confirm that the keyboard and monitor cables are connected to the MC 1 ports on the patch panel, and that the monitor is powered on. If not done previously, log on to the management console. The CE user ID and password are as follows:

    ID:  CE
    Password:  serv1cece

Note: If the management console panel is not functioning correctly, go to MAP6020 Management console problem determination.
  4. Once the installation process is started with the HMC GUI, do not interrupt the process by rebooting or shutting down the system or the HMC in any way. Doing so will cause an extended recovery process. Instead, contact your next level of support if you encounter any problems during the installation process that are not repaired by using the guided repair procedures.
  5. Display the storage facility install state.
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management.
    2. In the right work area, the Install State column displays the installation state of the storage facility.
  6. Is the Machine Type and Serial Number for the storage facility being installed listed on the panel as Ready for Field Install or New?
  7. In the bottom Tasks area, expand Storage Facility Install/Remove.
    1. If the Install State is New, click Install New Storage Facility to start the installation.
    2. If the Install State is Ready for Field Install, click Storage Facility Field Install to start the installation.
Note: After you complete the actions in steps 14 - 16, you will monitor installation status by using Table 1 and Table 2.
Note: After you click Install New Storage Facility, depending on system state, it might take less than 1 minute or as long as 20 minutes for the next dialog box to display. This is normal. Do not click Install New Storage Facility again.
  8. Follow the HMC prompts to perform the following tasks:
    1. If prompted, install the storage facility configuration media from the new storage facility into HMC (MC 1) in the existing storage facility. The media can be an SDHC memory card or a CD. See Figure 4. If you are not prompted for configuration media, continue to step 9.
      Notes:
      1. In most cases, you are not prompted for configuration media. Complete this step only if prompted for configuration media.
      2. The configuration information for each storage facility is already stored on the HMC. A backup copy is shipped with a new storage facility on either an SDHC memory card or a CD.
      3. If the HMC media card reader slot is sealed with tape, the SDHC memory card should already be in the slot.
      4. If the HMC media card reader slot is empty, the SDHC memory card or CD should be in the CE envelope. If not, then check the customer envelope or shipping material.
If prompted for configuration media, you must do one of the following:
      1. Determine if the SDHC memory card is in the HMC media card slot ( 3  Figure 4); if it is, proceed. If it is not, locate it and insert it, then proceed. After the installation is complete, leave the SDHC memory card in the HMC media card slot. It will be ready to use for error data offload. If the process fails with the SDHC memory card installed, find the CD and insert it, then proceed.
      2. If there is no SDHC memory card, find the CD and insert it, then proceed.
Note: For this model, the external DVD drive and tray are kept in the document enclosure in the left rear of the rack. Attach the drive tray to the front of the battery enclosure cover, and connect the drive to the HMC USB port ( 2  Figure 4).
      3. If you cannot find either media, stop and call the next level of support.

  9. The next HMC message will indicate that the Storage Facility Field Install process will now continue with power on and verification.
    1. This message refers to the software installation process. This action can take up to 1.5 hours to complete.
    2. The message directs you to return to the Storage Facility Installation Instructions to perform other actions. This is the step you will return to.
    3. The software installation is not finished until you complete step A3 in Table 1.
    4. There are additional install steps required after the software installation process is complete.
    5. Click OK to close the message and continue the installation process.
Note: If errors occur during the automated installation process, on-screen messages direct you to MAP1400 Repair a problem found during install storage facility process. Use the guidance in that MAP to resolve the problem and then restart the installation process.
  10. Follow the HMC prompts to complete the following tasks:
    1. When you install an all-flash system, the flash drive certify is normally automatic (you are not prompted). If prompted to perform drive certify on all-flash machine types, answer "Yes".
    2. The option to run the certify DDM process must be selected for all installations. The certify process will automatically start after the Storage Facility Field Install software process is completed (that is after you have completed step A3 in Table 1).
Note: Record the start date and time for the Monitor Certify DDM phase in Table 4, in section Recording information for the installation report.
    3. When the certify DDM process is complete the customer must be notified the storage facility is ready for use. There are two options:
      • If you will leave the customer site before the certify DDM process completes, select the option to generate a call home.
      • If you will stay onsite until the certify DDM is complete and you will notify the customer, then the call home is not required.
  11. To minimize the installation time, activities from Table 1 can be performed in parallel with activities from Table 2.
    • Use Table 1 to monitor and respond to the progress of the installation screens.
Note: In some cases, the installation status screens will update at the bottom, so you might need to scroll down to see the latest status.
    • Use Table 2 to continue the remaining installation tasks.
Table 1. Monitor the progress of the installation screens
    Installation Process A
A1 Do not log off or restart the management console.
A2 Check the HMC every 10 minutes and respond to any pop-up messages from the installation process. If an error is detected, follow the on-screen directions to go to MAP1400 HMC is reporting an installation error before serviceable events being created to repair the problem and restart.
A3 A message displays that indicates Field Installation Verification for the Storage Facility has completed. You might be asked to check whether any problems were logged. Read the on-screen instructions carefully, keep the message box open and do not reply to the message until after you have checked for problems.
A4 A message notifies you that field installation verification completed successfully. A second message notifies you that the drive certify process has started. Continue with Table 2
Note: Do not proceed with section Finish the installation and cleanup until the items in Table 1 above are complete.
