Exchange the storage enclosure midplane (12 slots, horizontal)
Before you begin
Use approved ESD procedures to prevent damage.
Attention:
- This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
- If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
- If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
- All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
- If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.
Remove the storage enclosure midplane
Before you begin
Notes:
- Ensure that you have been directed here by a management console guided FRU replacement procedure. The FC-AL fabric for this and the directly associated storage enclosures must be in the proper state to protect the customer from data loss.
- This procedure requires an 8 mm socket wrench.
Procedure

To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and
continue to replace the FRU:
- If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator,
which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators.
If not, use the location
code.Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
- Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
- If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
- If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator,
which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators.
If not, use the location
code.

Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working
on the correct enclosure or FRU.
- The
light path
identify LEDs are a hierarchy of LEDs that can identify the rack, enclosure, FRU, and even the FRU connector to which a cable is connected. - For more information, refer to MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators.

At the rear of the storage enclosure, release both power input cables from the retention
brackets
and disconnect them. See Figure 1.

IMPORTANT: Each disk drive module (DDM) and Fibre Channel interface card (FCIC) MUST BE
INSTALLED IN THE SAME EXACT POSITION in the new storage enclosure after the midplane is
replaced.
Warning: If the DDMs are swapped between slots, customer data will not be accessible and might be lost.

At the front of the rack, remove each DDM from the storage enclosure and set in a safe place.
You must ensure each one will be plugged in the same position in the new storage enclosure. Write
down the serial number and position of each part before removing them. See Figure 2.

To remove components from the rear of the storage enclosure, you might need to:
- Loosen cable ties
- Remove the cable tray from the enclosure being serviced or the enclosure above it
- Loosen or release the cable ties holding the FC-AL and power cables as needed.
- If you need to remove the cable tray, release the cable ties. Then, lift up on the spring-loaded latches at the left and right end of the tray and then slide the tray to the rear. See Figure 3.

- Disconnect the FC-AL cables from the FCIC cards.

At the rear of the rack, remove each FCIC card (P1-C1 and P1-C2). See Figure 4. You must ensure each one will be plugged
in the same position in the new storage enclosure. Write down the serial number and position of each
part before removing them.
Note: For help removing the FCIC card FRUs, refer to Exchange the Fibre Channel interface card (FCIC), optical.

- At the rear of the rack, remove each power supply (P1-E1
and P1-E2). See Figure 4.
Note: For help removing the power supplies, refer to Exchange the storage enclosure power supply.
- At the front of the rack, remove the plastic decorative bezel at the left end.
- At the front of the rack, use an 8 mm hex socket wrench to remove the two screws fastening the storage enclosure chassis to the rack mount rails and then remove the storage enclosure midplane chassis.
Install the storage enclosure midplane
Procedure

The new storage enclosure midplane chassis has no serial number. You need to apply serial
number labels to the new chassis.

Find the Repair Identification label sheet that was taped to the top of the new midplane
chassis. See Figure 5.

- At the front right of the old chassis, note the S/N label.
- Write the S/N of the old chassis on the front and rear labels of the label sheet.

At the front of the new chassis, apply the front label on the right mounting surface in the
same place as the old chassis. Ensure that the label does not block the bottom screw hole. See Figure 6.

At the rear of the new chassis, apply the rear label to the same label location between the two
FCIC cards as the old chassis. See Figure 7.

Find the Repair Identification label sheet that was taped to the top of the new midplane
chassis. See Figure 5.
- At the front of the rack, install the new storage enclosure chassis into the rack.
- Install the two screws (bottom left and bottom right) that fasten the chassis to the rack mount rails.
- Install the left decorative bezel.

Install each disk drive module (DDM) in the same position as it was in the old storage
enclosure.
CAUTION:If the DDMs are put in different positions, the customers will not be able to access their data properly.
- At the rear of the rack, install each Fibre Channel interface card (FCIC) in the same position as in the old chassis.
- At the rear of the rack, install the two power supplies.
- At the rear of the rack, install the sheet metal cable tray, if it was removed. Ensure that both spring-loaded latches are secure.

Secure the FC-AL cables and power cables with the cable ties, as needed.
Important: The optical cable plugs (LC connectors) and ports (SFPs) must be cleaned before connecting them. Use cleaning tool 54Y4392 or IBM-approved alternative. After cleaning SFPs with the tool, use air bulb 45D2645 or IBM-approved alternative. For detailed procedures, refer to current DS8000 Info Alerts or contact your next level of support.

Install each FC-AL cable in the exact position as it was in the old storage enclosure.
Use the location code labels on each cable to ensure that it is properly connected.
- If your FC-AL cables have location labels that include the physical location code (example: XC2-P1-C6-T2), refer to Figure 8. After the cables are connected, go to step 12.
- If your FC-AL cables have location labels with only the three-character connection designators (example: 4A1), go to step 11.

Determine whether Rack-1 FC-AL cabling is
enterprise
orbusiness class.
- At the front of Rack-1, open the front cover.

Find the rack internal model label on the inside left wall of the rack, as shown in Figure 20.

If the rack configuration is AE4, the FC-AL cabling is
enterprise single-phase
(Models 981, 98E). Refer to Figure 21 and Figure 22. - If the rack configuration is AB4, the FC-AL cabling is "business class" (Models 980, 98B). Refer to Figure 23 and Figure 24.
- If the rack configuration is AE5, the FC-AL cabling is "enterprise three-phase" (Models 981, 98E). Refer to Figure 25 and Figure 26.
