Exchange the DC-UPS fan assembly

Before you begin

CAUTION:
This assembly contains mechanical moving parts. Use care when you service this assembly. (C025)

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.
DANGER
Hazardous voltage, current, or energy levels are present inside of a component to which this label is attached. (L001)
Safety label L001

Remove the DC-UPS fan assembly

Procedure

  1. Open the rear door.
  2. To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.

Note: Locations for models 980, 981, 982 are shown. DC-UPS locations are similar for models 98x and 8xE.

  3. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
  4. At the DC-UPS DSU to be repaired, observe the J1-x Callout label 1 and J2-x Callout label 2 green LEDs. See Figure 2 or Figure 3.

Are one or more green LEDs lit solid?

    • Yes, continue at the next step.
    • No, do not continue this procedure because it requires the DC-UPS DSU to be powered on. Instead, you need to exit this procedure and do a pseudo-repair of the DC-UPS DSU FRU. When directed to replace the DC-UPS DSU FRU, do not replace it; instead, replace the DC-UPS fan assembly. If this DC-UPS is listed as a FRU in an open serviceable event FRU list, use that to pseudo-repair the DC-UPS DSU. If not, then refer to MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.

  5. Ensure that the replacement DC-UPS fan assembly FRU is unpacked and ready for installation.
  6. At the DC-UPS DSU being repaired, remove the power safety cover.
    1. Single-phase power: remove the two screws, then remove the two halves of the cover.
    2. Three-phase power: loosen the two screws, slide the cover up and remove the cover.
  7. Disconnect the DC-UPS fan assembly cable from the J4 connector (Figure 4 or Figure 5). Push the release latch at the side of the connector.

  8. Unscrew the three screws that secure fan assembly A1 to the DC-UPS (Figure 4 or Figure 5).
  9. Remove the DC-UPS fan assembly.

Install the DC-UPS fan assembly

Procedure

  1. Install the DC-UPS fan assembly.
  2. Tighten the three screws.
  3. Connect the DC-UPS fan assembly cable to the J4 connector.
  4. Ensure that both fans are spinning normally. (You can compare them with the other DC-UPS in this rack.)
  5. At the DC-UPS DSU being repaired, reinstall the power safety cover.
    1. Single-phase power: insert the tabs into the slot in the DSU fan assembly, then install the brackets and fasten with screws.
    2. Three-phase power: slide the cover down and into place, and tighten the two screws.
  6. Close the rear door.
  7. Exit this service information center parts exchange procedure and return to the procedure that sent you here.
